Jim and Lois, Member #258, Eugene, OR
Members Since 1988
"During our years in the network, we have stayed with
several hosts in other states that have also been with us in our Eugene home.
The exchange of ideas and viewpoints with many teachers we have shared homes
with over the years has been an important and desirable addition to our lives."
Jim and Lois have traveled extensively with EBBN to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Alaska, London, Frankfurt, Zurich and many of the States. They have booked approximately 70 trips, stayed with around 200 hosts and stayed over 600 nights with EBBN!
"We joined EBBN in 1988. We hosted a couple from Long Island, NY, before we ever tried to schedule any stays ourselves. Their
enthusiasm for the organization had started a number of years before. It soon rubbed off on us with our early stays for weekends in Vancouver,
Edmonds and Longview, WA. We have also scheduled many multiple-stay vacation trips." Below are stories and pictures from some of Lois and Jim's recent
adventures with EBBN!
Our first "Big One" was to New Zealand in 1996, where we stayed with 5 of the 6 members there. Having local knowledge of our hosts
resulted in us being able to see and do many things that most tourists never even hear or know about! Our first hosts, in the Aukland area, Fay and Malcolm
(#2717) even met our plane and gave us a look at their city from several key view points before going to their home. Three days later it was north to Keri Keri with Tricia and Mike (#2731), their house shown here.
Tricia had worked for a travel agnecy and arranged a booking for us on the Ninety Mile Beach tour, where the specially equiped bus not only drove on the beach highway, but
had several periods of driving in the surf and forging creeks. From the northern most cape of the North Island where the Indian Ocean meets the Pacific Ocean, we bussed south to
Rotorua and its thermal area (like Yellowstone)!
William and Averill (#2752), our hosts in Wanganui, gave us a look at their famous iron sand beaches of very black
sand. The picture here shows our hosts while we enjoyed breakfast with them. Our bus, ferry, and airplane pass purchased before leaving home, allowed us to ferry to the South Island and visit Christ Church, Queens Town, Milford South, and
Mount Cook before flying back to Auckland to continue our flight to Melbourne, Australia. Our host in Adelaide met our
7am overnight train from Melbourne and drove us to her suburban home that had easy local trains to the city. Our 3rd night with her was after a 75 mile ride to meet her husband and stay
at their sheep ranch where we watched their dogs "round em up" and the shearing that followed.
Our biggest itinerary through EBBN started on Septemeber 5th, 2001, when we left our home in Eugene, OR to drive "a little loop" to our winter home in Mesa, AZ by way of
Maine! During our 8 week, 10,160 mile drive, we booked stays with eleven educator members. Charlotte and John, (#8210) in Couer d'Alene, ID , and Kristine and William
(#3287) in Minot, ND were our hosts before going up to Winnipeg where we were when Sept. 11 hit us all. A few days later, we went to a Candlelite service in Eau Claire, WI
with our hosts Marilyn and John (#1133) at their local University football stadium with about 6000 others.
In Chicago we stayed in the national landmark village
of Riverside with Penny and Fred (#8400). We decided to view Niagara Falls from the US side, shown here, and then stayed with Elisabeth in Drummondville (#7129), just outside of Montreal before going into Maine where
we enjoyed Waterville and Colby College grounds with David and Elayne (#731). The coastal area of Boothbay with Carl (#4739) was delightfull where we had our first Maine Lobster!
Norm and Chris (#2284) hosted us for 4 days while we toured historic Boston and picked up our son at the airport to tour upstate NY with us. Our stay in the planned city of Crofton, MD was
our 2nd visit there. Our 1st time was with Lynda (#1279) and this time with Dean and Karen (#190). Our swing south and west back to Mesa included one more educator in Durham, NC, where we stayed with
Helen and Jack (#1039) near the campus of Duke University.
During our years in the network, we have stayed with several hosts in other states that have also been with us in our Eugene home. The exchange of ideas and viewpoints with many
teachers we have shared homes with over the years has been an important and desirable addition to our lives.
